These are postcards from the novelty category – picture puzzles – the sender would write out the back, then break the pieces apart and put in the envelope for mailing. These are 2 examples – the black is originally from the Beck Collection.
Wood block puzzles were very popular in the end of the 1800’s. This is a 9-piece puzzle with 6 different images.
Appearing later than wood block puzzles, puzzles printed on cardboard were popular children’s toys.
This is a six-sided 20 piece wood block puzzle in a wooden box with a lid that lifts off.
This is an example of a puzzle card that was included as a “premium”, this one was inserted in the Boston Globe. The pieces were meant to be cut apart and assembled.
